Organic Beeswax Candles – Good for you and the planet
We’ve discovered a source of excellent organic beeswax candles – Beeluxe. Their candles (and bath and body products, too) are eco-friendly, beautiful and smell amazing. But we wanted to find out more (and share with you!) about their company and its products. Check it out!
We asked: Tell us about beeswax candles. What makes them unique?
They answered: Beeswax candles are:
- Non carcinogenic
- Hypo-allergenic (if no fragrance is added)
- Naturally honey scented
- Burn longer than any other wax
We asked: What does it mean for beeswax to be organic?
They answered: Certified Organic beeswax is from beekeepers who don’t use any chemical pesticides on their hives. Just like organic foods, farmers don’t use any weed or pest control. It’s just another way to support farmers doing things the old-fashioned way, the truly natural way.
We asked: What about conventional paraffin candles?
They answered: Of the natural waxes available, beeswax is by far the most superior wax both for candles as well as our environment. Recent studies have found that paraffin wax candles emitted toxic chemicals (CNN) which cause cancer.
Paraffin wax candles equal petroleum – the equivalent of diesel exhaust when burned! By using Beeswax candles, you can save fossil fuel resources, improve air quality, and reduce your exposure to carcinogens, because beeswax candles burn 90 percent cleaner and last 50 percent longer than conventional paraffin candles.
When you burn a paraffin candle, you are breathing in toxic chemicals – toxic carcinogens. Within the past few months, CNN, Fox News and AOL have all done stories on the hazards of Paraffin and Soy Candles.
Here are some interesting Paraffin Facts from page 82 of The Green Book:
- The crude oil used to make just one 16-oz. paraffin candle contains enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 100 hours.
- If just one in 100 households replaced an 8-oz. petroleum candle with a soy or beeswax candle, the energy saved could keep the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center lit 24/7 from Thanksgiving until the 4th of July!
We asked: Soy candles? Aren’t those natural and healthy?
They answered: Soy can be an eco-friendly and sustainable product. However, it is not always organic – free of pesticides and herbicides. If it is not organic, you will be inhaling those chemicals when the candle is burnt. Soy can contain genetically modified material. There is no labeling required by the FDA on GMO (genetically modified organism) products. Who knows what is in genetically modified products?
Plus, soy must be hydrogenated in order for it to become wax. This process requires the use of metals which remain in the wax and are thrown off into the atmosphere when burned. Also, most soy candles are scented with chemical fragrance, not organic and all-natural essential oils.
Chemical fragrances release harmful chemicals into the air. The EPA found that the smoke and soot that these candles give off contain several dangerous chemicals – carcinogens, neurotoxins and reproductive toxins.
We asked: Yikes! So what do you use for scenting the candles?
They answered: We only use all-natural and organic essential oils for scenting our candles. These oils are extracted from the real plants.
We often get requests to make a candle with a particular scent, but no matter how popular, we will not make that scent unless it is available in an all-natural or organic option. Though scent is a driving force for candle purchasers, using fragrances that aren’t natural or organic would go against our high-quality standards.
We asked: Great! But what about environmental concerns? And how are the bees used for Beeluxe products protected?
They answered: It’s really scary what’s happening to endangered bees. We purchase our beeswax from valued suppliers who are doing their best under current conditions.
Beeluxe is about promoting a chemical-free home. What you buy impacts your home and the environment. The good news is, when you buy things that are good for your home, they tend to be good for the planet, too! That’s the case with our candles. It’s well thought-out, carefully crafted, and good for you, good for the bees, the farmers and the planet.
More importantly, we as a company are committed to being a part of the cause and donate a percentage of our profits in an effort to find a solution for the honey bees. Check out HelpTheHoneyBees.com.
