5 Natural Stress Busters

Share |

Fall commences the beginning of a very exciting but stressful time of year. It starts with September when you begin getting your tykes ready for back to school. The morning rush, homework and after school activities galore! Before you know it, you’ll be hosting holiday parties, out of town guests and shopping until you drop. When you’re feeling frazzled and counting to 10 doesn’t seem to be doing the trick anymore, it’s time to try these stress busters on for size.

The next time you’re feeling a little overwhelmed, try these simple, natural solutions to de-stress and relax:

1. Exercise.

Any aerobic activity, especially Yoga and Pilates, is the best treatment for stress. Exercise can decrease stress hormones like cortisol and increase endorphins; your bodies feel good chemicals, giving you a natural mood booster.  If the weather is cooperating, plan your workout routine outdoors. A little sunshine can have an amazing effect on your stress level and your outlook on life. You’ll feel more energized and ready to face whatever comes your way.

2. Healthy Diet.

A well-balanced diet is key to a stress-free life. Make sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, as well as foods that are high in complex carbohydrates, have moderate amounts of protein and are low in fat. Avoid excessive amounts of caffeine, which has been shown to increase anxiety.

3. Make time for YOU!

Draw a bath, grab your favorite book and light some candles. Even if you take just a few minutes away from the world, you’ll be amazed at the results! If you have some extra time (try not to laugh) prepare at-home spa treatments, like this one:

Avocado Banana Facial Mask

½ overripe banana, mashed
½ overripe avocado, mashed
2 Tbsp. plain yogurt
1 tsp. olive oil

Combine ingredients and mix well. Apply to clean face and neck. Leave on for 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse with warm water. All of the ingredients for the perfect at-home day spa experience are available at any Whole Foods Market.

4. Aromatherapy:

Aromatherapy can be tremendous for alleviating stress. Place a few drops of your favorite calming oil in a warm bath and relax. You can also put a few drops on a cloth and inhale from time to time during the day for a quick pick me up. Aromatherapy oils, like lavender, juniper and sandalwood, help to calm the mind and body. Visit your local Whole Foods Market Whole Body department for the perfect aromatherapy products.

5. Sleep.

Approximately 60% of people who are stressed don’t get enough sleep. Before you slip into bed, take a relaxing shower or bath and spritz a few sprays of lavender linen spray on your sheets. You’ll be asleep in no time!

The next time a stressful situation has you pulling your hair out and seeking relief, look to natural remedies and simple solutions from nature and Whole Foods Whole Body department. You’ll be feeling, ahhhh, relaxed in no time!
